Budgeting without bank login: what you give up and gain

By Andrew Boyko · Updated Nov 2026

You can budget well without handing a third party your bank credentials. Here is what changes and how to keep it easy.

What bank sync actually does

Most budgeting apps connect to your bank through a data aggregator. You enter your online banking credentials, or authorise access, and transactions flow into the app automatically. The convenience is real. So is the trade-off: a company you have no direct relationship with now holds a feed of everything you buy.

What you gain by skipping it

What you give up

Make manual tracking painless

  1. Log at the moment of purchase while you are standing in the queue. Three taps.
  2. Import weekly. Download a CSV, OFX or QIF from your bank, review the rows and choose an envelope once per merchant. Tick “always” to remember the rule.
  3. Reconcile monthly. Compare the envelope total with your bank balance and fix any difference.
  4. Use few envelopes. Fewer choices means faster logging.

How Sealed handles files

When you import a statement, the file is parsed on your device. Columns are detected, duplicates are flagged and you review everything before it is added. A single tap undoes the whole batch. Nothing is uploaded; you can check this in your browser's network tab or read the privacy policy.

Next step: learn the envelope method or compare with a subscription app that does use bank sync.

FAQ

Is budgeting without bank sync more work?

Yes, a little. Logging takes around ten seconds per purchase and importing a statement file once a week covers the rest. Many people find the attention itself is the benefit.

Is bank sync unsafe?

Reputable aggregators are generally secure, but connecting means a third party holds read access to your accounts and transaction history. Some people prefer not to share that at all.

What do I give up?

Automatic categorisation and instant balances. You also do not get spending across multiple devices unless you back up and restore.
